Typically timid and reserved, she has taken on the default of keeping a perfect, practiced smile on her face to avoid coming across as unapproachable or aloof when she is approached. Though, she still ranges from being stoic and relaxed, to being a very expressive person. She is either the best actress or the worst liar, depending on the situation.She does not often initiate conversations, nor does she typically approach directly, most especially if the person is not someone she is familiar with. She opts to listening and only speaking when prompted, due to her mother's constant scolding of only "speaking when spoken to" while growing up.If she is in a comfortable space, she'll switch to her more bubbly, airhead-like self. She is very empathetic and affectionate. She has experience in contemporary dance, singing, theater, and martial arts (mainly judo).Although she loves performance arts, she favors visual arts, mostly in painting, apparel and fashion design. Often joins her brother in people-watching, and sometimes does it on her own. She uses her collected plushies and figurines for practice; she makes clothing and accessories made for them.Her relationship with her mother wasn't completely sour. Before she moved to Japan, Yumemi learned how to cook with her mother's guidance, but she took more interest in the creation of pastries and desserts, which developed her sweet tooth.She loves to go shopping for clothes, accessories, plush toys and figurines, which then gave her impulsive buying tendencies. After Yusuke's father (Yuichi Kitagawa) left while his mother was unknowingly a month pregnant with Yusuke, he traveled to France for business and met Mirielle Hoshinori, who was an apparel designer at the time at one of the biggest fashion brands in France. They eventually fell in love and married after Mirielle ended up pregnant with a baby girl.This girl would grow up to be Yumemi Kitagawa. She grew up being the pride and joy of Yuichi and Mirielle, giving her everything that she wanted and raising her to be talented in multiple art forms, ranging from performative to visual. The first language she learnt was French, but her parents juggled English and Japanese while she grew up. Yumemi was particularly closer to her father, as he was the one that mostly nurtured her talent and passion for art, while the business-minded Mirielle enforced manners and etiquette, while making sure she was still performing well academically.Her father died while she was at the age of 10 due to cardiac arrest. Mirielle grew more protective over Yumemi and wanted to ensure her success for her future by raising her the way she viewed would be fit for her. She discouraged her pursuit for art and kept insisting for her to eventually aim for the field of marketing and business management. Mirielle distracted herself from the pain of losing her husband by working harder, and eventually, earning the position of public relations manager.

During her father's dying moments, he finally revealed to Yumemi that she had a half-brother who was under the care of Ichiryusai Madarame. He found out about Yusuke's existence through his brother, who was a colleague of Madarame, and he has been in the know since the death of his former lover. Due to shame and guilt that he abandoned Yusuke's mother, Yuichi couldn't face his own son and opted to support him and Madarame financially throughout the years. His last wish was for Yumemi to reunite with Yusuke on her 21st birthday, not only to meet her brother but to also experience the Japanese lifestyle, to which Mirielle reluctantly agreed.Even after Yuichi's death, Mirielle continued to send money to Madarame to honor her husband's wishes and simply because she couldn't leave the child alone, since he was still Yumemi's brother. In preparation for Yumemi's eventual move, Mirielle continued to focus on her work, leaving Yumemi mostly to herself.Growing up, Yumemi didn't have any lasting or genuine connections. Her last real best friend eventually moved away while she was 13, and most people she met were either afraid of her, envious of her, or used her for the sake of status or due to her looks.Upon receiving news of Madarame's controversy, Mirielle decided to send Yumemi to Japan sooner than planned for Yusuke's sake. Yumemi migrated to Japan at the age of 18, where she will begin living with him at an apartment located in the northern part of Aoyama, Tokyo. Mirielle gave Yumemi a hefty amount of money to her account, but due to Yumemi's strained relationship with her, Yumemi only used the money for emergencies and for the apartment's rent and bills. She wanted to prove a point, that she can survive on her own and she can pursue her love for art and find success.

She wears dark colors, other times pastels, but she mostly mix-and-match.Her "default" style is a purple long-sleeved chiffon blouse with rounded lace-edge collars, the shoulder area cut and exposed, and a black ribbon as a centerpiece. She has a high-waisted black skirt that would reach up until a few inches above her knees. She wears black thigh-highs underneath and black dolly shoes. She mostly wears a bow on her hair, which is almost always tied into a half ponytail.Other times, she would be wearing her Kosei High School uniform. The blazer would be left open due to it being too tight around her chest. Under the blazer, she wears a vintage-style white blouse. She wears black pantyhose stockings with her uniform, along with black platformed mary jane shoes.

When she is at work in the maid cafe, she disguises herself as "Emily"; she wears a maid uniform that is reserved for the "top workers" in the cafe, which are distinguished by the pink ribbons that accentuated their outfits instead of black. She wears white thigh-high stockings underneath. To try and keep her true identity hidden, she wears pink light make-up and she wears a pink wig tied into half twintails.
